During the holidays and winter break, I ate out a lot and enjoyed some amazing food! I also gained around five pounds and was feeling tired and sluggish, even though I was going to the gym. A family member suggested I try a detox, and I was intrigued and started researching it. I’ve always wanted to try a detox but never got around to doing it because I thought I would pass out from only drinking juices!
During my research, I came across several detox programs. I knew I only wanted to do three days since it was my first time. I also did not want to do a strict juicing detox because I was afraid it would not give me enough energy and make me excessively cranky 🙂 Dr Oz’s Detox Cleanse didn’t appeal to me because it involved only consuming drinks. That seemed boring to me because I like to chew real food too.
The detox that interested me the most was the Three Day Cleanse & Detox by Skinny Ms. because she offered choices and included actual meals. After trying her detox plan, I noticed a big change in how alert and focused I was. I also felt less bloated and I saw how important fruits, vegetables, and clean foods are to my diet. I hope it cleaned my insides out too, since that was my main reason for doing this 🙂 A detox will also help to kick your sugar habit, I saw a huge difference in how I felt from cutting out sugar. You will also lose a few pounds which is great if you’re trying to lose weight.
I first made a shopping list and bought all my produce and healthy foods.
I then prepped by washing the greens, making the Fat Flushing Soup, making the salad lunch for the next three days, cutting up my veggie snacks, and cooking chicken to go with my salad. You will be cutting a lot of veggies!
Here’s what I ate each day and what I thought of it:
Early AM: Lemon Ginger Detox Drink – I had a hard time stomaching the ginger since it has such a strong taste. I forced myself to drink it the first day but for Day 2 and 3, I just cut out the ginger.
Breakfast: Cleanse & Detox Smoothie – This was my absolute favorite thing about the detox. I was initially hesitant to try this smoothie. It contains apple, kale, parsley, celery, lemon, and chia seeds (I also threw in a date). It was so delicious and satisfying. I plan to make this even when I’m not on a detox!
Snack: Celery, Carrots, and Almonds – The key is to have these cut up and ready to eat when you feel like munching. I used to take it to go in a ziplock bag when I was going out.
Lunch: Green Salad with Lemon Oil Dressing and Chicken – This salad was so fulfilling, especially with the chicken. The homemade dressing was so easy to make and was better than bottled salad dressing. I felt so healthy when I ate this nutritious salad and it was quite delicious.
Dinner: Flush the Fat Away Vegetable Soup – This was another favorite of mine. The soup was super simple to prepare and was so nutritious! It had at least eight vegetables in it and was chock full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. I know I will definitely be making this on a regular basis. The beans give you extra protein and fill you up.
Bed: Chamomile Tea – I felt so relaxed drinking this before bed.
All the recipes for the above meals and smoothies are on the Skinnyms website. She also provides other options which you can try if you are getting bored of the morning smoothie or snack. I made quinoa for the first time on Day 3 and was pleasantly surprised at how good it tasted. Make sure you drink a lot of water while you are detoxing to aid in the cleansing process. You can still workout while you are on this detox program. I did a cardio activity on Day 2 but avoided lifting weights just to be safe.
With the start of 2015, this is the best time to try a detox. It will leave you feeling energized and clean from the inside out 🙂 I definitely would encourage everyone to try it once, you will love it. I wish I tried it sooner and hope to do it at least once a year! My kids also benefited because I always had healthy food available for them to eat. I also enjoyed the morning smoothie a lot and hope to incorporate some of the detox meals into my regular diet. Here’s to eating healthy throughout the year!
